A major Air Force autonomy development revealed earlier that week remained highly relevant on August 7. The Air Force Test Pilot School disclosed that its X-62 VISTA experimental aircraft had autonomously intercepted a real airborne target using live sensor information.
During the HAVE HEAT experiments, an AI agent ingested data directly from Lockheed Martin’s Legion Pod infrared search-and-track sensor and used it to control the X-62 against an airborne target in real time.
Separate reporting said the program completed 27 autonomous intercepts across eight flights, using a T-38 Talon as the target aircraft.
Why this is significant: Earlier AI fighter demonstrations often relied heavily on simulated information. This experiment linked:
real sensor → AI perception/decision-making → aircraft control
That is a critical step toward operational mission autonomy.
