Wisk Aero began construction of a 100-by-100-foot vertiport at Hollister Municipal Airport designed specifically to support both piloted and autonomous aircraft. The facility will be used to test Wisk’s Generation 6 autonomous eVTOL, precision landing systems, terminal-area procedures and operations in challenging environments such as GPS-denied conditions. Data from the site is expected to inform future FAA infrastructure standards.
Why it matters: Autonomous aviation commercialization requires more than aircraft certification. Wisk is effectively building the physical and regulatory infrastructure layer required for self-flying passenger aircraft. That could become particularly significant following Archer Aviation’s recently announced agreement to acquire Wisk from Boeing.
