U.S. Uses Autonomous Kamikaze Drone in Combat for the First Time

The U.S. military confirmed the first operational use of the Low-cost Unmanned Combat Attack System (LUCAS)during strikes against Iranian military infrastructure as part of Operation Epic Fury. The drone is a low-cost one-way attack platform modeled after Iran’s Shahed-136, designed to be launched from mobile ground systems and strike targets autonomously.

Key details:

  • Approximate cost: ~$35,000 per drone
  • Weight: about 180 pounds
  • Launch methods: catapult, rocket-assisted takeoff, or mobile launcher
  • Targets included missile sites, drone launchers, and command centers

Why this matters

  • Marks a major shift in U.S. combat doctrine toward cheap autonomous strike systems.
  • Demonstrates the Pentagon adopting “attritable” drone warfare strategies seen in Ukraine.
  • Signals a growing focus on mass-deployable autonomous weapons.
