One of the most significant aspects of today’s coverage is the Air Force’s acquisition strategy.
Rather than tying software to a single aircraft manufacturer, the Air Force has awarded autonomy software contracts to six companies:
- Anduril
- General Atomics
- Lockheed Martin
- Northrop Grumman
- Collins Aerospace (RTX)
- Shield AI
The service will continue evaluating competing autonomy “stacks” before selecting a primary mission autonomy provider, while keeping the architecture modular so software can be upgraded independently of the aircraft.
Why this matters: This represents a major shift toward software-defined air combat and could enable faster capability upgrades throughout the aircraft’s life cycle.
