One of today’s most important developments for space autonomy is the announcement of the 2026 SpaceWERX STRATFI awardees. Eleven companies were selected across orbital logistics, space-domain awareness, propulsion and other capabilities, with $562.5 million in total program/private-sector funding represented in this year’s cohort.
Most directly relevant to autonomous systems is Scout Space, which is developing space-based sensors and autonomy software for dynamic space operations. Its technology is aimed at allowing spacecraft to perceive nearby objects, characterize their environment and make decisions during increasingly complex orbital operations. Other awardees with autonomy-adjacent capabilities include Kall Morris Inc. for active debris removal/orbital logistics and ThinkOrbital for in-space assembly and construction.
Why it matters: This points toward a Space Force architecture in which satellites increasingly perform onboard perception, maneuver decisions, proximity operations and mission execution with less ground intervention. For investors, Scout Space sits at the intersection of autonomy, SDA, rendezvous/proximity operations and space security.
