Royal Navy demonstrates integrated autonomous maritime surveillance

The UK Ministry of Defence-backed Project Beehive completed successful trials combining:

  • An uncrewed surface vessel (USV) from ACUA Ocean
  • Teledyne FLIR tethered autonomous drone
  • Persistent ISR (Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance) capabilities

The system autonomously launches, powers, and recovers a drone from an unmanned surface vessel, enabling continuous surveillance without risking personnel. Because the drone remains tethered, it avoids the endurance limitations of battery-powered flight, making it attractive for:

  • Naval ISR
  • Border security
  • Offshore infrastructure protection
  • Maritime domain awareness

This is another step toward networked “system-of-systems” autonomy rather than individual autonomous platforms.
