On March 21, 2025, President Donald J. Trump announced that Boeing has been awarded the contract to develop the NGAD platform, now designated as the F-47. This sixth-generation fighter jet is poised to become the world’s most advanced combat aircraft, featuring unparalleled speed, maneuverability, and payload capabilities.
The F-47 program is part of the Air Force’s initiative to replace the aging F-22 Raptor fleet. The NGAD platform is envisioned as a “family of systems,” centering on a crewed fighter aircraft supported by uncrewed collaborative combat aircraft (CCA). Experimental flight tests have been underway since 2020, with the service aiming to field the F-47 by the decade’s end, making it the first U.S. sixth-generation fighter.
