NASA and Northrop Grumman announced plans to repurpose technology originally developed for the Gateway HALO module into three Lunar Infrastructure Demo (LID) missions supporting a future Moon base. The demonstrations are intended to mature surface power, thermal management, communications, hosted payload services and autonomy for infrastructure that can survive the lunar night near the Moon’s South Pole.
The LID missions are expected to occur during NASA’s first Moon Base development phase, which runs through 2029.
Why it matters: This points toward lunar bases that operate with a high degree of independence between crew visits. Autonomous systems will likely have to manage power, thermal control, communications, fault recovery and robotic logistics during periods when astronauts are absent.
