Merlin, which develops an AI-powered autonomous pilot for legacy and next-generation aircraft, received a Part 146 Aircraft Design Organization certificate from New Zealand’s Civil Aviation Authority. It allows Merlin engineers to internally approve certain aircraft design modifications that previously required outside organizations.
The change could shorten the engineering-to-certification cycle as Merlin works toward commercial autonomous cargo operations in New Zealand.
Why it matters: Certification remains one of the biggest barriers to scaling autonomous aviation. Merlin gaining delegated design authority creates a potentially important competitive advantage by allowing it to move aircraft modifications through the certification process more efficiently.
