Transport for London granted private-hire licenses to vehicles equipped with Wayve’s autonomous-driving system. Initial rides are expected later in summer 2026 for preregistered participants, although trained safety drivers will remain behind the wheel during this phase.
The vehicles are modified Ford Mustang Mach-Es using Wayve’s AI, cameras and radar. More than 100,000 people reportedly registered interest in trying the service. Fully driverless passenger operations will require additional government authorization.
Public significance: London’s dense traffic, cyclists, pedestrians and complex streets will provide an important real-world test. The rollout also raises questions about accountability in crashes and the effect of automation on taxi and private-hire employment.
