GM’s Cruise exit turns focus on challenges of scaling robotaxis

General Motors (GM) has announced the discontinuation of its Cruise robotaxi division, citing the substantial challenges and financial investments required to perfect autonomous vehicle technology. Despite investing nearly $10 billion into Cruise and initiating commercial operations, a significant accident in 2023 led to public outcry and regulatory investigations, prompting GM to halt the division’s operations. The company plans to integrate Cruise’s technical team with its own to advance driver-assist technologies, such as the Super Cruise system, which aligns more closely with GM’s core vehicle manufacturing and sales expertise.
