EHang flew its autonomous EH216-S passenger eVTOL at Hong Kong’s Cyberport on August 28, marking the aircraft’s inaugural demonstration flight in the city. The two-seat aircraft operates without an onboard pilot and is designed for short urban passenger missions. EHang and partners Kwoon Chung Smart Mobility and Cyberport were selected for Hong Kong’s Low-Altitude Economy Regulatory Sandbox X, which is being used to evaluate future commercial low-altitude aviation services.
Why it matters: This is one of the clearest examples of a major global city moving from UAM planning into real autonomous passenger-aircraft demonstrations. Hong Kong’s dense geography and Greater Bay Area connectivity make it an especially important proving ground for autonomous eVTOL networks.
Strategic signal: Cities increasingly appear to be adopting a sandbox → demonstration → route approval → commercial service model for UAM deployment.
