DARPA outlined miniature long-duration nuclear power for autonomous spacecraft

DARPA provided new details on its Rads to Watts program, under which seven teams are developing compact radiovoltaic power sources intended to operate for years or potentially decades. DARPA illustrated potential applications including spacecraft equipped with high-power electric or plasma propulsion. 

Autonomy relevance: Persistent autonomous spacecraft—particularly deep-space vehicles, inspection satellites, distributed sensors and orbital servicing platforms—need reliable power without frequent solar charging or ground intervention.

Investor takeaway: Long-duration power is a critical enabling technology for autonomous space operations. The commercial opportunity extends into semiconductor materials, radiation-hardened electronics, electric propulsion and persistent cislunar infrastructure.
