Autonomous Flight System Advancing for Military Transport Aircraft

An autonomous flight system called Merlin Pilot is progressing through development for the C-130J Super Hercules as part of a program involving U.S. Special Operations Command. The system is designed to automate flight operations from takeoff through landing with advanced autonomy.

What this enables

  • Reduced pilot workload and crew requirements
  • Potential optionally-piloted military aircraft
  • Autonomous logistics flights in contested environments

Strategic implication
This is a key step toward autonomous cargo and tactical airlift, which could support distributed operations in the Indo-Pacific.
