Archer Aviation announced that its piloted, all-electric Midnight eVTOL completed a round trip between Salinas Municipal Airport and Monterey Regional Airport. The flight itself occurred on July 30, but Archer publicly announced the milestone on August 3, 2026.
Each leg took about nine minutes, compared with roughly 35 minutes or more by car. Archer coordinated the operation with the FAA and described it as a model for the short regional routes it expects to fly through the federal eVTOL Integration Pilot Program.
Why this matters
This was more significant than another isolated test flight because it demonstrated several elements needed for real air-taxi service:
- Airport-to-airport operations: Midnight flew between two operating municipal airports rather than remaining inside a single test area.
- Repeatability: The aircraft completed both outbound and return legs.
- FAA coordination: The mission tested the operational coordination required for integrating eVTOL aircraft into conventional airspace.
- Commercially relevant travel time: A nine-minute flight illustrates the value proposition for congested regional corridors.
Archer said it intends to replicate this operating model with partners in Texas, Florida and New York, while also preparing for Los Angeles operations connected to the 2028 Olympic Games. The company is working with federal, state and municipal authorities on infrastructure, procedures and local operating capabilities.
