AEVEX agreed to acquire BlackSea Technologies, a major U.S. provider of unmanned surface and subsea systems. The consideration includes roughly $250M cash, $350M of AEVEX stock and up to $50M of performance-based earnouts.
The strategic logic is unusually strong: AEVEX already operates across autonomous aircraft, AI-enabled mission software, ISR and electronic warfare, while BlackSea adds maritime autonomous systems. The combined platform therefore pushes AEVEX toward a genuine air + surface + subsea autonomy portfolio.
Why PE/VC should care: This is another signal that defense autonomy is moving toward multi-domain platform consolidation. Buyers increasingly appear interested in owning the complete stack—vehicles, sensors, mission software, communications and payloads—rather than isolated drone technologies.
Investor watch: Expect stronger strategic interest in smaller companies specializing in:
- maritime autonomy software
- UUV/USV payloads
- navigation in GPS-denied environments
- edge AI
- ISR sensors
- command-and-control
- resilient communications
